Even Simultaneous Bilinguals Do Not Reach Monolingual Levels of Proficiency in Syntax

چکیده

While there is no doubt that children raised bilingual can become extremely proficient in both languages, theorists are divided on whether bilingualism effectively monolingualism twice (the “Two Monolinguals One Brain” hypothesis) or differs some fundamental way from monolingualism. A strong version of the Monolinguals” hypothesis predicts bilinguals achieve monolingual-level proficiency either (or both) their languages. Recently, Bylund and Abrahamsson argued evidence lower syntactic simultaneous was due to confounds language dominance; when tested primary language, any difference disappears. We find for this hypothesis. Meta-analysis Monte Carlo simulation show variation published results fully consistent with sampling error, method mattered. Meta-analytic estimates strongly indicate performance by relative monolinguals. Re-analysis a large dataset (N = 115,020) confirms finding, even controlling dominance. Interestingly, effect relatively small, challenging current theories.

Syntax production in bilinguals.

We used fMRI to examine the functional correlates of syntactical processing in the first (L1) and second (L2) languages of non-proficient, late bilinguals. Subjects either covertly read words or produced sentences from them. Syntactical production during sentence production activated regions including left inferior frontal (LIFG) gyrus and the supplementary motor area in both languages. Analyse...

Cross-Language Priming in Chinese-English Bilinguals with Different Second Language Proficiency Levels

In this paper we describe an experimental study of crosslanguage priming effects between Chinese and English. The priming effects for both translation equivalents and semantically related word pairs were examined from a developmental aspect, in particular under three different situations according to bilinguals’ second language (English) proficiency level measured by CPVT and language history q...
